  • Goodbye Grown Up Guilt

Goodbye Grown Up Guilt15. March 2018

Here at Gymboree Play & Music Cheam, we love meeting so many parents and getting to be part of your little one’s development and growth, but we so often hear from you guys that you’re feeling guilty about your parenting.

So why are grown ups feeling guilty?

Well often it’s social misconceptions in society that help to perpetuate the guilt felt by parents. One such for new mums is the formula vs. breastfeeding debate which causes many new mums who can’t breastfeed, or choose not to, to feel terrible about their decision. We’re here to tell you that as a parent, no matter what you choose, if it’s the best decision for you, it’s the best decision. Whilst we know that breastfeeding has many benefits for both mum and baby, it’s not an easy journey for many mums and in cases where little ones have tongue ties or mums have had health problems, formula provides a sometimes life saving, fully nutritious alternative.

Another example of parenting guilt we see a lot is particularly surrounding behaviour management in little ones. It can be very difficult as a grown up to feel like you’re making the right decisions as there’s no handbook, and it can also be really easy to compare yourself to other parents and their children. Whilst it’s great to have reference and support of other parents, each child is individual and the way they react to things will be different, so it’s really important to keep that in mind. And let’s face it, if the occasional chocolate biscuit bribe does the job, who are we to argue!? :)  Here at Gymboree Play & Music Cheam we encourage positivity in our class and love to praise your little ones for actions such as tidying.

Of course sometimes feelings of guilt can take over and anxiety can develop. If you’re struggling with these feelings or feel you may be struggling with post-natal depression, which can affect both mothers and fathers, we recommend taking a look at this NCT website article and speaking to your GP for further advice.

And remember, practicing regular self care, whether it be a cup of tea when you can snatch a moment, a nice bath for yourself or having a grown up night with friends or your partner occasionally… this is a necessity as a parent. Looking after yourself should never be a source of guilt, after all looking after yourself means you can then give well to your little one.

We hope you found this blog post interesting and helpful and remember we’re here to support you in classes!

  • Rain, rain, go away!

Rain, rain, go away!22. February 2018

Living in the South of England we get our fair share of sunshine compared to the rest of the UK, but the recent cold and wet weather has been hitting us hard!

Here’s our top ten tips on how to make a rainy day fun!

    1. Have a game of musical chairs or practice our freeze dance at home with your own music! You can even get an older sibling to start and stop the music to get them involved too! You can also just dance and move to the music too!
    2. Messy art play! Spread out a cheap cover for your carpet and get out the paints and glitter and have some fun!
    3. Make a space on your floor, remove any valuables and grab a washing basket and some little rolled up socks or other soft items to practice throwing and aiming!
    4. Pretend and play! Use your imagination; build a playfort with blankets and furniture and pretend to be in a castle or a den! Turn off the lights and grab a torch for extra fun!
    5. Read a story together. This will help your little one’s linguistic and phonic development even if they are just listening for now. For older little ones this will help develop their reading and vocabulary skills!
    6. Take a mid day bath and have some fun with toys and bubbles!
    7. Make a rainy day music box! Grab some elastic bands, stretch them over a cardboard box and make a makeshift guitar. With little ones make your own maraccas with rice and a little tube or well sealed recycled carton. You can also buy some little instruments and pop them in a box and let little ones pick them out – similar to our Busy box!
    8.  If all else fails and your little ones are desperate to play, go outside and jump in puddles with them and have some muddy fun at the park! Take extra clothes just in case, or something washable or that you can throw away to help cover car seats if driving.
    9. Play hide and seek with some toys!
    10. Come along to Gymboree Play & Music Cheam with your little ones! As well as your classes, you can book one off extra sessions in addition to your normal class date, and we have Open Gym as part of your membership package on Monday and Thursday 12.15pm-1.15pm.
  • Praising Positivity!

    Praising Positivity!15. February 2018

Here at Gymboree Play & Music Cheam, we love to create a positive Play & Learn environment for your little one. From our colourful playfloor and equipment, to our smiling Gymbos, fun themes and our bubble fun, we love to make your little ones smile!

As teachers, we recognise how important praise and positivity is in a learning environment, particularly where play is involved. Using a technique called ‘positive reinforcement’ we praise your little ones for actions such as tidying, sharing and celebrate their learning achievements; whether that’s pushing and walking with the Airlog in Level 3 classes, developing speech in Level 4, or recognising colours in Level 5. You’ll hear use verbal cues ‘fantastic work!’, ‘brilliant tidying’; we will reward little ones with rides on the Airlog, Gymbo kisses and we’ll clap and use your little one’s names in the class to show them they are a valued individual. Often when children see their peers being praised too they make a mental note to copy their friends! Positivity is infectious after all! :)

So how can this help at home? As we praise your little ones in class for their learning, they recognise this as a good thing and are encouraged to repeat the action. It gives them a sense of their strengths, independence and confidence in their actions. It could be at home that you praise little ones for trying a new food, sharing their toys or speaking a new word. Whilst we recognise that it is impossible and potentially detrimental to ignore all negative actions and behaviours, the idea is to really focus on the positive actions and traits more than anything to help them grow as little people!

  • The importance of song and music in learning

The importance of song and music in learning8. February 2018

Here at Gymboree Play & Music Cheam, singing and music are a huge part of our classes! So what benefit does this have for your little one?

    1. Singing and exposure to music can help your little one develop their memory and form important neurological pathways. Our songs at Gymboree Play and Music, reinforced with play, can help little ones memorise words, colours and other ideas! As teachers, we love seeing little ones grow and go in to our upper levels, learning the songs we sing and join in! Our colour song ‘red and yellow, green and blue’ is a firm favourite and it’s brilliant to see how it helps little ones memorise their colours.
    2. When your little one does join in, singing provides a brilliant source of expression of emotions and aids linguistic and phonological development too! Learning to expect rhymes at the end of sentences and reinforcing syllables is only going to help little ones before the school curriculum literacy begins!
    3. Music has been shown to ‘light up the brain’, engaging all areas of the brain and stimulating pathways. Studies have shown that mathematic, spacial awareness and linguistic skills are all improved by the learning of an instrument or singing.
    4. Music and singing from an early age helps little ones develop a natural sense of rhythm and melodic familiarity, helping with recognition and the reproduction of tones.
    5. Singing and making music with instruments promotes social development with our friends! And when you shake an instrument or are using it to make a sound, you’re often working on your fine and gross motor skills!
    6. Music and singing can help little ones with special needs and/or learning difficulties. As it’s own universal language, music can be used to communicate where other forms of communication may not be possible. It brings everyone together and promotes inclusivity.

So as you can see, there are so many benefits to singing and music. At Gymboree Play & Music through our classes we help to bring this experience to your little one and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
