We are the experts in early childhood development

At Gymboree Play & Music we are often told by parents, “You are the only class that manages to engage my child.” This is not a coincidence! It is a reflection of the fact that Gymboree Play & Music are the experts in early childhood development and as such, we know children; we know what works, what engages, and what is appropriate for the many different developmental stages between birth and age 5. Gymboree Play & Music has published its own best-selling books on “learning through play” and develops its class curriculum with the involvement and input of experts from around the world.

We actively involve parents and carers in our classes

Gymboree Play & Music classes are recognised for our unique approach to parent/carer involvement which encourages adult participation in and understanding of all class activities. Research has shown that young children learn best – and have the most fun – when parents and carers enter their world of play and imagination. At Gymboree Play & Music, every adult is an active participant and play partner, making your time at Gymboree Play & Music all the more fun and enjoyable.

We are world leaders with almost 40 years of experience

Gymboree Play & Music began in 1976 when Joan Barnes, a mother from
California, tried to find a safe, fun place featuring age-appropriate activities for parents and young children to play together. Unable to do so, she did what any enterprising person would – she started her own! Gymboree Play & Music has been proudly inspiring parents and children ever since. Today, with classes in over 700 locations in over 40 countries, Gymboree Play & Music is the global leader in early childhood development programmes. Why settle for less?

  • How to survive your child’s Birthday Party: Planning, Celebrating and Beyond

How to survive your child’s Birthday Party: Planning, Celebrating and Beyond21. June 2017

By Lucy Gill, Business Development Manager, Gymboree Play & Music UK

The special day has finally arrived after what seems like months and month of planning and preparation. The three tiered ‘Pepper Pig’ cake is in the fridge, the ‘Paw Patrol’ balloons are filled with helium and the entertainer is armed with all three verses of your little one’s favorite ‘Mr. Tumble’ song.

    What could possibly go wrong?

Shock, horror, it’s the morning of the party and your darling child tells you that; Pepper Pig is no longer cool, they now hate Paw Patrol and have apparently never heard of Mr Tumble! In fact, they now want a Superhero party just like Sally had last week!

    How do you react?

Full on panic and a crazy dash to the supermarket? A last minute Amazon Prime Now order to try and make sure your little one has everything they could possibly want? Or take a breath, smile and think ‘actually, none of that really matters’.

Yes you’ve spent a small fortune to make this party ‘the best one yet’ but remember, with all your friends and family in one place, your child surrounded by presents, cake, food, balloons and a day dedicated just to them; this is definitely more than enough love, fuss and attention they need.

Having worked as a Gymboree party leader for many years, I am going to give you my top tips on how to survive your child’s birthday party.

    • Send out your invitations in plenty of time. The competition for that Saturday afternoon slot can be tough; don’t risk leaving it to late and being disappointed.
    • Consider sharing the day with a friend. Birthday parties can be expensive and lots of planning, why not share the load?
    • Don’t focus too strongly on one theme. Children tend to change their minds very quickly. Think of a theme that can be easily adapted, example’s are Jungle Safari, Football, Pirates & Princess or Under the Sea!
  • Play: A Serious learning technique or just for fun?

Play: A Serious learning technique or just for fun?21. June 2017

By Katie Johnson, Manager, Gymboree Play & Music Surbiton

It’s no secret that Gymboree Play & Music places a lot of importance in ‘Play’ as a major learning process and here’s why:

When we play, in many cases, we place our undivided attention in our actions. For example: An actor is trained to be present, most famously a ‘Method’ Actor is trained to be nothing but their character. Of course, they understand that what they are ‘playing’ isn’t the truth, but that doesn’t detract from their dedication to the process of ‘Play’ in this instance.

From one perspective, this is how children live their everyday life, very rarely preoccupied with thoughts just in the present, forever reacting to the information around them.

If you place yourselves in a child’s shoes we can begin to understand why Maria Montessori states that ‘Play is the work of the Child’, as “Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.” (Fred Rogers)

Unfortunately, when we look at the definition of Play it seems to paint a different picture:

Play: (verb) To engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.

To someone that works with or has children this definition is just crazy. Yes, playing is fun, but that doesn’t take away from its importance in our development and how we learn and understand the world.

    Play has purpose!

    • Ball games teach cause & effect, problem solving and even conversation skills where turn taking is involved.
    • Peek – a – boo teaches object permanence and develops confidence and trust.
    • Even just singing nursery rhymes builds our little ones’ memory. We have all seen how easy children pick up nursery rhymes due to repetition – this literally teaches your little one to learn new skills through practicing, a process that they will use their entire life to master new skills.

But play isn’t just about learning new skills, it’s also a great way to understand the world around us. When children engage in role play games such as ‘mummies & daddies’ or ‘doctors & nurses’ they are exploring the world by mirroring experiences they may have had or heard of. They understand that it isn’t the truth, but much like the Method Actor it doesn’t detract from their dedication to the game.

Playing is never a waste of time so try your best to invest in a little bit of play every day. Dedicate some time have some purposeful fun and teach your little one how the world works – after all you are their favourite play mate!
